We are happy to have done our job on the proper way. We could have extracted Tarka and Katie from the situation where they were involved. For us it was a great satisfaction to have the chance to help extract both successfully, and to have the possibility to keep their life in safe, even more for those who have free spirits like us, adventurers. We know that life is a trip with no return. we look for the value or every beat of the heart as a last, living intensively and exploring to extend our limits, which does not exist.

Yesterday, on October 1st, at about 10:00 AM, Tarka and Katie were discharge from the hospital, at El Calafate. I could see them healthy, still tired but smiling and happy. As a member of the Árgentine National Gendarmerie, it was a great pleasure to assist Tarka and Katie, during our tour to the city we could speak about the expedition´ experience, and a little about their personal life. I can say that it was like to be lucky and to have had the privilege to know about these nice people and their challenge for the coming future. I, again congratulate them for the effort they have done and a nice news become to my knowledge about their next wedding . Regards.

Pablo Bazul is in many ways right. AT boots for such a traverse are hardly adequate footwear. Also, no sleds?
for those interested in truly inspirational adventures look for Thomas Ulrich’s article in National Geographic about the complete Hielo Continental traverse. He has also published a book about the subject. Funny enough there is mention on this website on how these guys were going to do this traverse faster than Ulrich and Borge Ousland. I wonder if you even know who Ousland is? have a look at his curriculum. I would say he has some experience on this kind of terrain unlike these folks.

Hi everyone and good for Tarka and Katie, I’m sure they are in very good hands now.
I’ve just been phoned to be told about this weirdo Pablo Bazul who’s been writing stupid things during the day and I’m very surprised (badly) about what he wrote in his last msge, which he signed as ‘Mariano from York’ as
I did previously with my own mesages. Also I read the messages this person has been sending today.
I don’t know who the hells this man is, or if he is from Calafate.
It’s been a pleasure for me trying to help from here with Prefectura Naval and the boats during the last weekend, sadly Tarka and Katie couldn’t make it to the lake and the Helicopter had to be sent.
I guess that this Mr Pablo Baul has been reading my messages, but I don’t know why he’s done this now, and why he got my name on this.
I’m very sorry about this and Pablo… I hope you mind your own business.
Sadie you’ve got my telephone number and feel free to call me if u’ ve got any doubts. I know this is not important form most of you, but it wasn’t nice reading all this things.

The Director of the Dr Formenti Hospital, Dr Marcelo Bravo at the “El Calafate”, Argentina, and his Medical Team are proud to have to assisted Tarka and Katie. After the effort of been rescued and transported to the hospital, trekkers were assisted and they are now safe. It has caused high expectation until both were seeing almost walking by themselves but tired because of the though time lived. We all thank their efoort and professionlism showed up.

The Embassy have just phoned to confirm that Katie and Tarka will most probably stay overnight in the hospital today but that they are expected to make a full recovery.

For many following this expedition what Katie and Tarka have achieved is amazing and it’s great to read the fantastic support they are receiving from the message page. However there are a few who seem to have other opinions, and I request that these people please ask yourselves the question that ‘given the situation is this really an appropriate time to be giving critical feedback?’ I haven’t known Tarka and Katie for long, but from what I have learned about them in that short time I am sure they will welcome and take on board feedback once they are rested and recovered. For the moment please let them focus on getting to safey and keep the critical feedback for a more appropriate time.

From Project Manager – Pablo we as a team appreciate all comments, however I just wanted to make it clear that the Argentinian Government has not paid for this rescue. Rivers of Ice have insurance to cover for such unfortunate situations. As a life goal we only hope to open peoples eyes to areas that many may never see. We certainly have plans to thank all those that have helped us get to this point and rest assured we never take the kindness of locals and countrys for granted.

Yes Guys, the best for you and thank God for everything. Dont leave without remembering how expensive this operation is for the Argentinian government. A chopper from Rio Gallegos at 300 miles from where you are.
During the winter in Patagonia Argentina a lot of families get isolated in places impossible to reach and sometimes they die. People here are thinking about your ego and selfishnes, you never listened to people who’ve been telling you about your lack of experience and bad equipment. That Pablo Bessier from Chle told you long ago, you didnt listened, that capongrosi told u not to go down Spegazzini, experts avoided that because there are experts! you play foolish, leave a donation at least at the hospital, go and see how many poor people are in Calafate.
What next? Hindu Kush in Afganistan? and when you get in trouble you’ll call the Nato Forces to go a reach you, and then one or 2 german or british soldiers die while trying to reach you? Go now to England and have that champagne and Chateaubriand with your family and friends, and sponsors, write a book, do conference tours and make lots of money, but dont come back here, we can’t afford more foolish mistakes.

Well, we all want that helicoter to take you safe and sound outside of the glaciar. But dear people, why didnt you follow advice from experts? Do you know that here in Patagonia there are many people, families with children, living in very far places in middle of nowhere? in winter this people dont get rescue by helicocpter!!! and many of them die!!! Sometimes they can not leave their place for 3 months because of 4 metres of snow and no rescue services!!! Your helicopter had been sent from Rio Gallegos, 250 miles frio Calafate!!! only to rescue you, and you wanted to be there at your own risk!!! I hope you pay for this rescue, there is no money here to afford you acts, this is not Europe with all the boats, planes and numerous teams!!! you are using a service that has to be used for the right people! Before leaving Calafate or after you do so, send some donations to the Hospital, there are lots of poor families in this small town.
This chilean Pablo Beisser told you about yout lack of experience and crap equipment, have you seen his CV? then this Campogrosi told u about how bad Spegazzini is, and you are proud of being the first to try it… That’s only ego, as well as sellfishness.
Nobody has been there because they all know that Spegachini glacier is harder that what you couldnt do in Paso Reichert/Mayo. Next time listen more.
What next? Hindu Kush in Afganistan? and then rescued by Nato Forces with the result of ten british or german soldiers dead after trying to reach you? Everyone here is a bit upset here about this, people strugling for gas and work and you playing with your lifes.
Dont come back next year, stay in England having the parties with the people you’been making to worry a lot, eating that Chateaubriand and playing with your Mr Men Collection, or go somewhere else.

11.25 GMT. Tarka and Katie have just called Sadie & they know that a helicopter is on its way, leaving base at 6am Argentinean time this morning. The base is 300km from their position and it will need to refuel at Calafate in Argentina before it then goes to collect them. I will post news on messages as information received. The updates page will be updated asap but due to technical difficulties will not happen immediately.

Tarka – please tie piece of red flannel over your nose and see that it stays on while you dangle from helicopter – that way you will be one up on the pottle-who had no toes. Also it will add colour to photos. Glad you are due to escape from the ‘fridge’ , hopefully wqithout having to do any bullfighting. Ermanno Salvaterra and partners exited via the Spegazzini in 1994 after doing the very same traverse that these guys made (they took a mere ten days from Jorge Montt to there). Ermanno described the descent down to the south side of Spegazzini as pretty bad. He thought it would have been easier to do the Falla Reichert than to descend that way… They were eventually picked up by helicopter.

Tarka and Katie, hope the weather improves today, and you get to the bottom. I told Prefectura Naval and National Parks where u where yesterday and they are just waiting for news.
In good weather, it would take them 2 hours to get to Spegazzini. The Canal Norte of Lago Argentino gets a bit rough as the boats leave the port and head north-west, (all the wind u had in the ice cap goes into this fjord).
U may see bigger boats or catamarans with tourist around midday, if you arrange rescue with coast guard just wait for their semi rigids, they are the proffesionals and they’ll be looking for u)

My name is Danny Feldman and I’m located in El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Argentina.
I’m traing to help out from there with the coas gards (prefectura) in orther to bring you to El Calafate.
I guess you should exit via the Mayo Glacier but i’m not an expert montaineer to confirm this. I know this, since i’v been helping other expeditions before and most of them exit via Mayo Glacier.
I’m in touch with Sady and pass her coordenates of a place where it is a Refugio with a stove and this is a great place to wait for the coast gards to catch up with you. I took this coordenates from GoogleEarth.

I do have a RIB boat, 5,20mts with a 60HP but this kind of rescues are usually done by the CoasGards, it is theyr duty. I’v all ready been in touch with the chief of Prefectura here in Calafate couple of times all ready and they need to know when and were to send the rescue boat for you.

Take your time in Spegazzini, when you make it to the bottom just keep off the ice, the front wall is over 100 metres high and there is a lot of ice breaking off the glacier every minute, these ice blocks are massive and the flying debris can reach long distances. Once you are by the lake and whilst rescue is arranged, you can head down some 4 miles and u’ll find an old ranch hut at “puesto las vacas” , very nice place by the water sheltered in a small bay, you can see it in google. There ’s some wild cattle, descendants from cows from when people used to live there, beware of the bulls.

I keep in touch with your coordinator here in England and I’m waiting to hear of your location (are u descending Spegazzini or Mayo?
I u gonna try Spegazzini go by the right hand side (if u are looking at the lake) ’cause the left is too steep and with presence of avalanches from Mount Spegazzini.

Guys what you ‘ve been doing is great, don’t feel dissapointed ’cause it is really hard down there. Have a look if u can go east to the Argentinian side of the ice to descend to Laguna Escondida just below Mount de Mayo, a few of expeditions got out of the ice using this route, it’s supposed to be very accesible and goes straight to the Canal (fiord) Mayo, where u can be waiting for a boat in less than a day.
‘Fernandez Campbell” is the tourist company that has a good fleet of boat going everywhere in the Lake Argentino all day, and by this time of the year they usually go to this area of the lake, it’s only 40 minutes from the National Parks headquarters in Perito Moreno Glacier. U can get their phone, call them at the town of El Calafate, from where u can take a regular bus to Puerto Natales in Chile if u need to get there to go back to Santiago.
Also is good to get in touch with ‘Prefectura naval Argentina’ (Coast guard) that can help u get rescued from canal Mayo.
Take care and be carefull on the way down. Hope u got good pics of Reichert.

Hi guys,
Two games i play whilst in the car with the kids, the first one “I’m thinking of an animal” one person has an animal, insect fish in thier head, all the others take it in turn to ask a question, ie has it got four legs or is it a wild animal. it just goes on until its guessed or they give up. The second is a memory game where the first person starts with” i was walking along when i met a man” then they add anything they want like “with a dog”. then the next person has to repeat the sentence so far and add another item “i was walking along when i met a man with a dog and he wore red gloves” you keep taking it in turns adding items until someone cocks up. I know it sounds a bit boring but it can eat up the time and youd be amazed how many items you can remember (especially if you picture it as a story board)

I heard K’s comments today about checking out volcanoes and it really peaked my interest. I’m a geologist, and while have never had the luck to visit the Campo de Hielo Sur (CHS), a bit over two years ago I happen to notice a possible unidentified subglacial volcano in the CHS. There was no mention of this volcano anywhere so I noted it in Google Earth, and it’s related community (see here http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=875220). I also contacted a few fellow geologist in Chile and the US, who agreed that the shape of topography was very suggestive of a partially collapsed stratovolcano (a la Mount St Helens). Sadly, there was no ground evidence one way or another. There are no signs of ash as in some of the other regional volcanoes, so it has probably been inactive for a while (if is a volcano), but it would be increadibly helpful to get a photograph from groundlevel. Based on the rough map on the “Update” page I can’t quite tell if the track was close to this location or not, but It would be really FANTASTIC to know if the team went anywhere near this location. Coordinates are 49.999354S , 73.665047W.

storytelling is a good tent occupation you can warm up with alphabet games, take it in turns and start with a different letter of the alphabet – choose a topic first (say, sitting out a storm with Eddie Izzard – as in your interview)and it could go something like thes: T. At last, a chance to spend quality time with someone interesting! K. But you have got me T. Crumbs, I’v dropped a birck there K. Dont worry I’ve got someone really exciting here T E………………………… and so on. Another game is for one person to choose 3 random words and challenge the other to join them together in a story ( Like perhaps Marmite, Tent peg and Sunbathing). Third suggestion is Just so stories, One person demands a Just-so story to explain a query of their choice, Why ice is cold, why there are no polar bears in antarctica, How the crampon got its name, why the twitter cannot stop. NB no scientific explanations! Another game played in traffric jams is to count your blessings – a quicl-fir response is needed to disaster suggestions ‘ More filty weather? – great,, more time to spend with Eddie Izzard. nothing to see but ice? Fantastic – not a lorry in site! More time in the tent? Should be able to finish that novel/saga/3 act play in verse etc. – love from Ione xx

hi. yes, yours is the longest trip in the ice cap for a woman. sure of that. the continuos stay of your hands and feet in a cold and wet condition as is the ice cap, bring what is called “trench foot “or hand. is a damage to the very fine sensitives nerves. this last a few weeks. always recovers in full condition and bring no damage or less resistence to the cold in the next exposure.

Not going to do a full biology lecture but my remembrances of nursing say its just about receptors in the skin – basically there are a few different sorts and they mainly deal with sensation, by the time temperature is below 10c ( or above 48! -u wish!!) most sensation is by nociceptors, which ususally deal with pain sensations – thermoreceptors have bogged off and gone to sleep!! Not aware of deficiency that causes such but no expert in ice cap medicine and my nursings getting rustier by the minute! Try and keep em warm as Ted said – thinkin of you loads and all day long – xxxxx ps have you seen kates impression of eddie izzard yet???

I don’t know the cause of the fingertip sensitivity, but my experience down in that part of the world is that it is common. Next stage can be painful cracking and splitting of the skin. Not sure if your fuel will allow, but washing my hands in soap and warm water, ideally every day, has really helped in the past. Lotion or cooking oil helps some, preferably applied to clean hands and slipped into gloves just before bed.
I’ve also had some success reducing the sensitivity by making an extra effort to keep my hands at as consistent and warmish a temperature as possible. The sensitivity goes away very quickly after returning to town. I know that’s not much help now.

I’m cheering you on invisibly from Australia – I’m so impressed with what you’ve done and am willing the conditions to fall into place so you can finish the journey.

I’m not aware of any other woman having done the full length of the icecap or even a decent part of it. It’s hard to know though because trips on the icecap are not well documented.

At least you’re not eating your shoelaces and boots yet – though I guess they’re synthetic and not as nutritious as the old leather ones.

Hi. to cross the reichert fall, you not only need 3 or 4 days. this must be perfect days in a row. this never happen in patagonia. if you go dow the north side of the reichert fall, you will arrive in chilean corridor, a narrow and dangeorus place full of crevasses and once there is impossible to go back .the only way to go out is to the ocean and call a rescue very expensive or keep going to the south. to the south is a full 2 days ascent to a 2200 mts bastion mountain. after that is a 600 meters ice fall. we used 300 meters fix rope there . You dont had the fix rope, or the time and food to in safety cross all. the way back to estancia cristina in uppsala glaciar is no way easy since is all against the wind. dont push until to late.
think about it.

Fantastic page here – every day home from the office I check on their progress. Hope they make it back unscathed — finished or not. I hope my native Chile is kind to them in the end. It’s a spectacular and cruel part of the world.

It would be great to get the current coordinates (at least each night) to follow their progress more closely. Would that be possible? (maybe a Google Maps page — very easy to set up)

Also hearing about K’s CO condition a few days ago (before the diagnosis was mage), I recalled a story I heard on “This American Life” that covered psychological&physiological disturbances and CO poisoning (in this case “hauntings”, etc). Read about it here:

And this story was based on much milder CO poisoning, can’t image dealing with this on a trek such as this one. Of course 99.9% of humans would be anxious in these conditions CO or no CO.

Good morning and glad u are pushing more and more. It’s been nice being tracking u guys all the way south, I’d just would love (and I think a lot of people would too) to read some descriptions of the place you’ve been walking during your trek.
I mean, it would be cool to see the name of the mountains, etc, and how things look from where u are (if wheather lets u see something…)
I see u are quite close to the Chilean fiords, hope u find de the way through this bit of ice and get to the Reichert in good shape, I’m looking forward to reading a good desciption of your days in that area.

We listened to your podcast for the first time today, my PC is not man enough to do it, but we used the laptop in the house and it worked fine, gives a different perspective to the journey rather than just reading your words. Hy you two. Home at last and thinking of putting the heating on. Spent the day with Celia and Pete and Leela in toronto yesterday. Lovely weather but got off the plane this morning to cold and wet UK. I know it must feel desparate battling through the elements but your progress looks fantastic on the kitchen wall map so just grit your teeth and go for it. Remember the last pony club champs Kate, the shows not over until the fat lady and all that. Couldnt work out from the posts which toe it is Kate. I wondered if it was your left big one trying to compete with when Hattie severed mine as it might be catching. Your mum seems to have destroyed her knee cartilidge and keeps hopping all over the place. We are off to Tommys wedding on Saturday and the Kilt arrived yesterday. It looks fantastic so I will b able to challenge the wee jobby for style at functions in the future. i am jet lagged so going now but I am thinking of you all the time and when that next shit weather front comes through just remember the family (Bruno) motto. Hi Guys, Well done so far, but it seems the weather is not helping…I hope it gets better and u can keep going.
Remember u are about to leave the area of Upasla Glacier and U are gonna enter the area of the ice cap behind Mount (Cerro) Murallon, towards Altiplano Italia, an area only known by a few people, and just before getting to the Cerro de Mayo area (famous for being almost imposible). But to the east, you can Estancia Cristina (a ranch where I used to live) can is the best place to get out of the ice a have a huge “cordero patagonico” (patagonian lamb).

I could not get the pod cast today either, I like to compare the written news to the spoken so I can tell how really down you are. It’s looking good on the little crash bandy coot route despite the storm you seem to be making progress, horrified Katie that you are snoe ploughing but hey ho, we may have to work on that at Christmas. Well I think you will be proud of my little camping adventure, not quite as epic as the things you nutters do! But an achievement in my eyes anyway. Camping was a shock to the system at first but I have to say I am a camping convert and cant wait to do it again! Shawn even got me in the sea for my first ‘try’ dive, which I loved so i’m gonna do the open water dive course. I know its a shock, I like camping and ventured into the very cold sea, you can both close your mouths now !

I gave Wiggie a cuddle for you this morning, he’s very chipper, not his usual grump when you both disappear.

Anyway we all send you lots of good thoughts, take care of each other.

Incidentally there are quite a few little bits and pieces on the site that were put up during our initial testing and aren’t quite right such as the cooker and fuel. I think a couple of people have bought this item up now! There was a stage when we tested the MSR Reactor a while back but it proved too unreliable at low temps so we are using a good old Whisperlite. I promise I will make all the changes to the site over the next few days, we have just been inundated with work lately. Regardless, if you’re got an opinion on particular pieces of kit please post it.

Thanks Walter, when we started organising this journey the pack raft seemed to be a good choice to paddle to and from the ice cap. However we have spent quite some time training and testing the raft in the wind and strong currents and now and we also agree that the pack raft isn’t suitable for this journey. Unless you try these things though you never know.

If you are ever lucky enough to spend time with Katie and Tarka you will very quickly realize that their hard work and drive makes nothing impossible. Just a two min chat on the phone and they make all your worrys and problems seem easier to cope with. Love the new video hate the idea of surviving on such little food and dont forget to never underestimate the positive power of marzipan.

This trip sounds completly unrealistic from the beggining.
The raft, the tent, the cooking sistem and the average speed you propose. I wish you the best. anyway.
But once you enter into the real Thinks will work much different.
