One of the biggest problems is raising the alarm should you find yourself in an emergency situation. McMurdo have developed the Fastfind personal locator Beacon for just such a situation. This compact device will easily fit into a pocket, and in an emergency can be manually activated sending a 406 MHz distress signal to the rescue services with position information and details of the owner. The unit also transmits a 121.5 MHz homing signal to further help locate the casualty.
